Well, this mild winter has been soft on our furnaces. The last few days we have been answering a lot of “no heat” calls.
These are the questions we ask all clients before we head out for a service call. Hopefully these tips help save someone some money.
1. Your thermostat controls what your furnace does. If the batteries are weak or dead, you very well could lose communication with the furnace. Try changing the batteries first, even if it looks like it's working, they may not be strong enough to run your furnace.
We recommend doing a routine change every time you change the batteries in your smoke detectors, twice a year.
2. If your filter is clogged, it will prevent your furnace from pushing air effectively. This could cause the heat exchanger to over heat and deactivate. Try replacing the filter.
Remember not to run your furnace without a filter, ever. It will suck the dirt and debris into the cabinet and could damage your heat exchanger.
3. Covered vents can shut a furnace off simply due to a safety mechanism to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. So head outside and ensure those vents aren't covered with ice, snow or trash on a windy day.
If you’ve tried all of these things and still can’t get your furnace up and running, give us a shout. We're here to help.
